The Middelburg Muslim School recently attended the Association of Muslim Schools (AMS) Matric Awards Program for the Gauteng and Northern Provinces. The event, held on the 12th of February, provided an opportunity for our school to come together with other Muslim schools and celebrate the achievements of our matriculants.

We were welcomed to the event by Mr Imtiaz Saib, an executive member of AMS. After an opening qiraat by Hafez Zafeer Patel, a learner from the Lenasia Muslim School, we were addressed by the Ameer of the AMS Gauteng and Northern Provinces, Mr Ebrahim Saloojee. The awards report was presented by Mr Faruk Türkmen, the deputy chariman of the AMS Gauteng and Northern Provinces.

The Middelburg Muslim School’s top learners were awarded with accolades. Humaira Osman, who achieved 7 distinctions, was awarded the Islamiaat and Academic Excellence Awards. Tasmiyah Suliman was awarded the Akhlaaq Award. Well done to both learners.

One of the highlights of the event was the guest address delivered by Moulana Sulaiman Ravat of Radio Islam International. His thought-provoking speech focused on the challenges facing Muslim youth in today’s society. He highlighted the importance of developing emotional intelligence (EQ) in addition to traditional academic intelligence (IQ).

Moulana spoke about how young people are often spiritually and emotionally neglected, even more so than material neglect. He touched upon the challenges of atheism and intellectual apostasy that Muslim youth face in contemporary times. The speaker shared the example of Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr  رضي الله عنه who was from a wealthy background but chose to give up his material life and serve Islam. The speaker also shared the example of Zayd ibn Ḥārithah رضي الله عنه , who chose to stay with the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم over his own father.

The importance of young people having meaningful relationships and a strong sense of Islamic identity as well as becoming active citizens was emphasized.

The event was concluded with a closing Dua’ by Moulana Mohammed Asvat, the principal of the Springs Muslim School.

We congratulate all the matriculants who were recognized at the event and wish them every success in their future endeavors. We also extend our gratitude to the organizers of the Association of Muslim Schools Matric Awards Program for a successful event.
